I work at a nursing home. I did same thing to one of residents. She also liked see fishing magazines and told me what kind of fishes were on a magazine. It was amazing. So we told her family that if they could take her to fishing once in a while and they did!! I wish all the care givers could know their interests... please refer to my idea on the website. Thanks.

Yes meaningful activity can change behaviors. Here is an example.
When I first met Grumpy Old Ethel, she was a total non participant. She was there only because the aide brought her in her wheel chair. Actually the only reason she was in a wheel chair was because she wouldn’t cooperate walking. Ethel was often just plain mean. As the Benevolent Ballet class went on I noticed she was observing. I even saw a toe tap once in a while. As the weeks went on Ethel joined more and more. Then one day I spotted her down the hall. I invited her to join our class and began singing one of our favorite Stauss waltzes. Low and behold, here comes Ethel in her red plaid jacket swinging her walker down the hall. I think she was even smiling.

I spent nearly four years working in an Alzheimer’s/Long Term Care facility in Utah and I know the difficulties and pains associated with this disease. I personally got to know some great people afflicted with Alzheimer’s and I also became close with some of their families. I’ve seen a lot of resources that help. One in particular seems to be a great benefit: http://www.thecaringspace.com
Please pass this link along to anyone you feel could benefit from it.
